The Origin
While serving together in the Ninewa Province in Northern Iraq, Kryptek founders Josh Cleghorn and Butch Whiting discovered they shared a common thread: an unparalleled passion and desire for extreme big game hunting, especially in austere environments. Both Army attack helicopter pilots, Cleghorn and Whiting spent many hours on deployment.
We’re serving overseas, and we both had grown up backcountry hunting, and in our downtime, we’d reminisce about it and compare experiences. Eventually, we started talking about how it would be awesome to be part of the outdoor industry so we could live our passion every day. Our vision we came up with was to bring some of the advances we’d seen in military/tactical apparel to hunters. As soon as we came home, we put that vision into a business plan – that’s how Kryptek got its start.
Butch Whiting
The first idea that came to mind for Cleghorn and Whiting was the development of a new camouflage pattern. They knew that the most effective passive concealment measure on the battlefield is camo netting after a ghillie suit. The hexagons become distorted when the net is stretched over a hide-site or tent. It takes on a three-dimensional aspect. Kryptek took these 3D aspects and made them print on a two-dimensional surface. A technique called micro and macro layering.
The patterns are extensively field-tested in some of the most austere environments and conditions in the world, in both hunting and combat situations. The patterns are used by U.S. Special Operation Units and SWAT team members across the country. With so much attention, the pattern caught the eye of people in the entertainment industry. You can see Kryptek camo in video games like Call of Duty Black Ops and Advanced Warfare, as well as Hollywood movies including American Sniper, Fast & Furious 7, Jurassic World, and more.
The Patterns
What started as one pattern has grown to ten, each with distinctive camo netting 3D aspects. One of the most popular patterns is Highlander, which is also the pattern used across the new eyewear collection. Highlander™ is most popular in sage, desert, and open terrain. There is Altitude™, a pattern designed for above the tree line, where the air is thin and the cover is sparse. If you want something a bit brighter, Pontus™ is designed for the open-water angler. Kryptek has found color palettes for almost any environment required for military application, or hunting and sport.
The Eyewear
The Oakley SI team is excited to launch the Kryptek Eyewear Collection. This 5-piece collection features Kryptek’s Highlander™ pattern. The pattern is applied to the eyewear using Oakley’s unique hydrographic film process. Each piece of eyewear is unique. The collection features both sport and lifestyle frames to complement any activity an outdoor adventurer pursues. The collection includes Oakley SI lifestyle favorites Gascan® and Holbrook™, and the enduring sport performance style Flak® XL 2.0. Two new styles are added with Mainlink™ XL and Sylas™, both a hybrid of lifestyle and sport performance. Each style has Prizm Tungsten Polarized lenses which are ideal for an outdoor environment.
